Friday, May 10, 2019I unfortunately will be unable to make the services. I'll remember Bill as someone I looked up to early in my career. He always looked sharp in uniform and was a no nonsense police officer that displayed a command presence when he needed to. He was one of my instructors in the police academy and a friend ever since. My most sincere condolences to his family and friends. Retired Chief Gerald J Schaffer Ventnor City PD

Thursday, May 9, 2019As many of you, I had tears in my eyes when Mrs. Sharon Hurley called me. I am at a loss for words. Bill was by my side when we fought to stop the corporate county dump and corporate private prison from coming to our small town in Virginia. While many abandoned the fight, Bill followed it through until we stopped them. These were hard fought battles, ones that tested a person's mettle - Bill never wavered nor retreated. Those of us who knew him, expected nothing less of him. A soldiers soldier. Sergeant Bill. He was my firearms instructor, mentor, neighbor, and very dear friend. He was family. Mrs. Hurley saved my fathers life - something that I will always remember. That is who the Hurley family is. That is what they are like. That is what they do. Actions, not words. I can count my closest friends on one hand - he was one. Everyone should be so fortunate to have a friend as dear as Bill. One day he showed up unannounced at our farm in Virginia with a shooting bench that he made with heavy lumber - we moved it to Missouri and it is the first thing that you see when driving toward our house - just a few feet away from the front door. Just where Bill would have put it. On nice days we have coffee on the veranda and sit on a green outdoor chair that Bill repaired with his welder - not only did Bill weld it, he painted the repair green so you would not see the repair. That was 20 years ago. Bill was a perfectionist and a true gentleman. He loved Mrs. Hurley, his children, and his grandchildren. His thoughts and actions of them were of the highest regard. I miss my friend Bill Hurley. The world was was certainly left better for Bill having been here. There was only one Bill Hurley. May God bless and protect the Bill Hurley family. Vincent Finelli
